The
five caprices for violin and piano are a commission of the French Radio
for a broadcast series titled Alla breve. The form of the
Five Caprices was imposed, in its timing, by Radio France and the series
constraints. Rather than a limitation this led the composer to a certain
freedom in style. The title makes a reference to the notion of free
invention and to whim. The five parts contrast with each other and expose
the virtuosity and artistry of both Mr. Capuçon and Mr. Braley.
